T he purpose of this site is to contain the output of a photography degree. Some of it is a course requirement: most of it is on public display by choice.

The site is intentionally labyrinthine with several components started and shelved or on hold. For academic assessment I build an austere Wordpress site for each module where tutors and assessors can examine a subset of the whole.

[5Oct22] The about for C&N was pretty concise. The about for I&P rambled. This was LPE.

M   y stated ethos in May 2020, during C&N was,

To produce a visual representation of something that merits this attention in such a way as to do the subject object justice.
All these judgements are necessarily subjective and the terms deliberately ambiguous. blog, 16th May

I wrote this a couple of days ago [July 2021],

To record what something or someone once looked like as an aid to personal recollection, or for the possible interest, information or amusement of a stranger.

[5Aug22] I had a thought today — my pursuits, when not directed by assignments, are photographing the non-obvious; looking for sets; plant use and abuse; depicting the passage of time. My main interest in the photographs of others is the history of self-portraiture.
And another thought that has been coalescing recently: much of my practice of late, both on and off course, has been about time; then and now [I&P Asg.4 and Asg.5; LPE Asg.3]. The obvious conclusion might be that is simply sentimentality, a function of being old, and there must be some truth in that, but I believe that more important is a fascination with the tension between the immediacy and conclusiveness of the (aptly named) shutter and the collusion and coincidence of bringing together two or more images related by one factor (usually location) and separated by others (usually, in this case, time). [assemble quotes on photographs and time, Barthes, Jay and so on.]
I wrote to a fellow student in the LPE chat group,

For any project (that being a very loose term), be it self-chosen or OCA-derived, I need a subject (again loose), an intended delivery format and an approach (loose). I juggle combinations until one or more appear satisfactory, then might try them…
Sometimes, coming up with a satisfactory solution is sufficient and I don't feel the need to implement it - seeing it in my head is enough. All of my terms, project, subject, delivery and approach need defining and perhaps relabelling, but they give a hint of my intended meaning. email, 4 July

D isclaimer I noted in the blog in November 2019 that Disney has started for apologising for the attitudes portrayed in some of its older films. I have a feeling that, being a person of age, I will sometimes have to do the same.

P hot, Beaufort Aldous

[2Oct22] I do not embrace social media, but today, 4 years in, and halfway through the course, I am minded to engage with Twitter in a limited way, mostly as an occasional notebook. I was prompted by a useful article in The Times and the need for an easy way to flag it. My name will be Beaufort Aldous Phot: I might need to buy a burner to set it up.
[later] no burner needed, an email will do. @baphot not available, it's @AldousPhot.
