Result
The results came out yesterday. 60% after 62%for C&N and 53% for EyV. If my tutor had asked "what mark do you expect?" (which at least one did, reported in the I&P chat group) I would have replied, "higher than EyV, but lower than C&N". That turned out to be accurate, but still something of a disappointment after the effort that went into the FinAss.
So it goes, that's the level of performance tutors expect and that's the level of marks I'll expect.
The full list of marks is not on the OCA web site yet, but here's my archive ready.

Assessment
Well I think it's in. I've populated all the folders. No announcement or acknowledgement, though.
12th September, Reflective presentation/ evaluation
From Course Guide for assessment of Photography units
4. Reflective presentation/evaluation
All levels - Your reflective presentation or evaluation will also help assessors to navigate your submission. If you choose to include images of your work in this, we suggest roughly 10 to 12 images. This could help you to visually connect your reflections to your work. If you choose to present this as video, you can keep this very simple using a mobile phone or laptop— it could show you speaking about, or even handling, your work, you could use this to show aspects of scale, texture, physicality of materials or process. Course Guide for assessment of Photography units p.2
I was a little concerned at first when I realised that much of the course required me to photograph strangers, but it all went surprisingly well, with the help of a supportive and positive tutor.
The centrepiece of my work is 100 Dogs (Assignment 3), where I photographed the dog-owners I encountered on my daily Covid Walks. Before that, I had photographed charity shop workers (Assignment 1) and local clergy (Assignment 2), though the latter became as much about the effects of phases of Covid restrictions as the clergy themselves. For the last two assignments I photographed the modern equivalents of the workers in a 1954 I-Spy book (#4) and the modern counterparts of local buildings featured in Old Eltham type books (#5).
Box A
Assignment 5
Bowling Green, Well Hall Pleasaunce,
c.1936 and 2021
Assignments 1-3 were chosen to submit for assessment, largely because 4 and 5, while containing some of the most effective photographs made during I&P, include third party imagery that might compromise the submission (as in fig. A1).
The course measures seem to change every year, from assessment criteria to learning outcomes to the new three criteria (Knowledge, Understanding and Application) but they are gradually becoming clearer and the recent Zoom meeting on Assessments addressed by Edward Smith was a great help.
As regards my progress on the current LOs, these are submitted as four PDFs in ?? and links to the online versions are given below.
L01 Practical - my technique is usually equal to the subjects I set out to represent, though it will be seen that in Assignment 4, my tutor criticised a lack of shadow detail. This caused me to revise my workflow.
L01 is illustrated by:
Exercise 1.3, Portraiture typology
Exercise 2.1, Individual spaces
Exercise 5.1, Still Life
L02 Conceptual - an equally important part of this outcome is to actually generate ideas relevant to the course tasks and then devise ways to realise them. I believe that I have made progress in this area this year, see
Exercise 1.4, Archival intervention
Exercise 3.2, Your personality
Exercise 4.5, Image and Text
L03 Theoretical - the exploration of the work of others, both famous and less so, is one of the major attractions of these courses. While in many cases I have no personal interest in following in their footsteps, it is nevertheless fascinating to learn about and come to understand their work and there are inevitable tangential spinoffs that influence my own output, see
Assignment 1 Essay, Defining the Portrait
Exercise 3.3, Reflecting
Assignment 2 Essay, Ownership and Authorship
L04 Analytical - progress in L03 also feeds this outcome as one learns the verbal language of the medium and practices its use. My approach to evaluating of my own work and others' is gradually being refined and strengthened, and I have set a personal objective on future courses to write at least one full evaluation during each course unit in addition to any such course work, see
Course Preamble, Square Mile
Exercise 1.1, Historic Portrait
Exercise 1.2, August Sander
Overall, my studies this year have been better organised and more systematic and my confidence in self expression has strengthened.
I have gradually come to terms with digital submission and my approach has developed through I&P. I believe that the assignment submission (at least the online version, available to the public) should be a complete entity in itself and thus should comprise the brief (perhaps shortened), an introduction, the images and the reflection. All four are necessary for a coherent piece of work and although the contents of the assignment introduction are available in the diary / blog, an uninformed reader alighting on the web page should not be expected to hunt for important contextual information. This development can be seen through the five online assignment submission pages (links:
Assignment 1 -
Assignment 2 -
Assignment 3 -
Assignment 4 -
Assignment 5), some of which were reworked.
Similarly, students' responses to the tutors' feedback is significant. I find that I sometimes fail to express myself precisely enough in the assignment introduction and reflection and therefore have to clarify my meanings and intentions following feedback. I have gradually refined a process of annotating the feedback (links:
#1 -
#2 -
#3 -
#4 -
#5).
My C&N tutor set me the task of writing a booklet on my coursework and I found this so rewarding that I resolved to make a new one for each course. This will not be completed in time for this Assessment but an online version will be added to the web site when complete and I will follow my usual practice of leaving a few printed copies in relevant locations for the public to find (typically, the bookshops of the V&A, Tate Modern and Turner Contemporary).
31st August, Start with a list
I have 30 days to assemble my Assessment. As noted below from the very helpful Zoom meeting, that requires:
- 2-3 Learning Logs for each Learning Outcome
- LO1 demonstrate an ability to make technically accomplished photographic work and apply technique purposefully and appropriately
- LO2 be able to translate ideas into visual outcomes with confidence and autonomy
- LO3 show a developed critical understanding of contemporary practice in relation to historical practice and theory, and the themes explored in this unit
- LO4 be able to reflect upon your own work and that of others with increasing confidence and criticality
- 3 of the assignments for creative work
- I am inclined towards the first 3: charity shops, clergy and 100 Dogs. They are stronger than 4&5 and have no copyright issues.
- A reflective evaluation
- 1-2,000 words, I think they said
- 5 tutor reports - no choices needed here ✓ [still awaiting #5]
- and a document to help navigation through the material
- I'll complete The Book afterwards
- text

✓ means chosen
L01 - photographs, apply technique purposefully and appropriately
L02 - photographs, translate ideas into visual outcomes
L03 - writing, a developed critical understanding

Intro
[3Sep] My understanding from the enormously useful Zoom meeting with Edward Smith 26th August 2021 advising on FA submissions — the requirements for Level 1 assessment are:
2-3 examples of work for each Learning Outcome;
the images and submission text from three assignments;
a personal reflection on the course as a whole of around 1,000 words; and
the tutor feedback for all five assignments.
That information has been organised as four separate documents as follows: Learning Outcomes - etc
BOOK
A record of all my work on I&P is available in two locations. Primarily, a website sub domain ip.baphot.co.uk has been created for this assessment process. In addition, there is a labyrinthine parent meta-site at /baphot.co.uk that covers the whole degree and the many digressions that arise.
26th August, Zoom
A very useful morning attending a Zoom on assessment.
The important slide is #1,
What needs to be prepared for submission?
1. Selection of learning log entries:
a For Music course units, complete listening log and selection of learning log entries
b Not applicable to Creative Writing course units
2. Selection of creative work
a Refer to the Course Guides for your course unit for further advice
3. Essays/ Critical Reviews/ Written Reports/ Extended Written Pieces
a Tend to be at HES and HE6, may be some at HE4, check Course Guides for your course unit for further advice
4. Reflective presentation/evaluation
5. Tutor reports
1. Learning Logs - 2-3 entries for each L/O (AND L/Os HAVE CHANGED)
2. Creative Work, for photo courses 3 series.
3. If essays then send for a plagiarism check
4. Reflective presentation/evaluation - not sure
5. send all the tutor reports.
Level 2 Pathway
Holy poop, Batman. Here is the New Pathway, described as, "The curriculum has been refreshed to explicitly incorporate a range of perspectives including diverse and often unrepresented voices, environmental issues and social contexts. "
from OCA email 25th August
I will probably have to bring forward starting Landscape a couple of months as I only have 5 days to get on the old pathway.
Now back to assessment. The L/Os for I&P from the Course Guide for assessment of Photography units (Assessment Guidance Version: November 2021 event) are:
LO1 demonstrate an ability to make technically accomplished photographic work
and apply technique purposefully and appropriately
LO2 be able to translate ideas into visual outcomes with confidence and
autonomy
LO3 show a developed critical understanding of contemporary practice in
relation to historical practice and theory, and the themes explored in this unit
LO4 be able to reflect upon your own work and that of others with increasing
confidence and criticality
12th August, go for November
I equivocated in July, "I had always intended to submit IP for Assessment in November 2021, but have just had the thought that maybe I should delay that."
But came to my senses today, "I’ve been taking myself too seriously of late. Let’s bang this puppy in for November assessment and get on with things. That will mean applying for ass’t by the end of August and submitting by the end of September."
from Preparing for assessment pp.7-8
What do I need to submit?
The elements you need to submit are known as your assessment requirements
and will include the following:
1. A selection of learning log entries evidencing the connections between your coursework and learning outcomes (this requirement does not apply to Creative Writing course units). See the Course Guides which will provide information on your learning outcomes.
2. A selection of creative work, such as a portfolio, or other presentation of your final or strongest pieces. See the Course Guides for details.
3. Any critical reviews, essays, or other written reports. Check the Course Guides to see if you need to submit a written element.
4. A reflective presentation or evaluation reflecting on your work and learning journey as a whole. For most students this will either take the form of a 6 minute presentation, or a 750 word written evaluation. For students submitting Creative Writing course units, you will submit a reflective commentary.
5. Your tutor reports. You should have received five or six reports, depending upon your course unit, from your tutor. Please submit these.
From Course Guide for assessment of Photography units
PH4IAP - Photography 1: Identity and Place
Learning Outcomes
LO1 demonstrate an ability to make technically accomplished photographic work
and apply technique purposefully and appropriately
LO2 be able to translate ideas into visual outcomes with confidence and
autonomy
LO3 show a developed critical understanding of contemporary practice in
relation to historical practice and theory, and the themes explored in this unit
LO4 be able to reflect upon your own work and that of others with increasing
confidence and criticality
Suggestions on how to meet the Learning Outcomes
LO1 Select an assignment in which you felt your final outcome showed your strongest technical skills, that could be directing and producing your shoots, camera handling, lighting, exposure, composition and colour and where you learnt the most about applying your chosen techniques - perhaps you overcame a technical challenge and are proud of the way you adapted your technique and the visual qualities this brought about?
LO2 Which assignment best realised your ideas about your chosen subject, it doesn’t have to have been the outcome that presented the first idea you came up with, but could be one that you had to work through - that was even the toughest to develop - but best showcases your ability to synthesise visual and practical research, your storytelling skills, or where you feel you achieved a more meaningful expression of your subject.
LO3 Learning log entries focusing on research are perfect for this. Perhaps there was a particular reflection post in which you explored a text from the reading list in depth; a piece of independent visual research where you were able to reflect on the photographic work - its context and visual and technical qualities - with a questioning, objective standpoint; a research post further investigating a given theme discovered within the coursework; reflection on a gallery or exhibition visit.
LO4 This could be evidenced through a selection of learning log entries, perhaps where you document personal feedback received from a study visit, the student forum or virtual study event; a couple of research point exercises where you felt you deeply engaged with the work under discussion; a research entry which demonstrates your best visual analysis; or your most thorough reflection post on tutor feedback from a certain assignment.
13th June, Assessment Criteria
There are three systems of which I am aware.
When I started, there were four assessment criteria: context, creativity, quality and technical skills.
During C&N these transformed into learning outcomes, detailed below: LO1 technical; LO2 translate ideas into visual outcomes; LO3 critical understanding of contemporary practice; LO4 reflection.
Last month (May 2021) a new set of three was trailed: knowledge, understanding and application.

16th August
[16Aug20] It's never too early to start planning.
At the time of writing, I have finished work for C&N but not submitted the work for assessment (that's what brings us here). I have started work on I&P, but using the freely-available course extract. Assessment has switched to digital-only because of virus fears and the students are in the dark about what is expected and what to do. Another document has been published on the topic: here's my C&N posting and here's the I&P component.

PH4IAP - Photography 1: Identity and Place
Learning OutcomesLO1 demonstrate an ability to make technically accomplished photographic work and apply technique purposefully and appropriately
LO2 be able to translate ideas into visual outcomes with confidence and autonomy
LO3 show a developed critical understanding of contemporary practice in relation to historical practice and theory, and the themes explored in this unit
LO4 be able to reflect upon your own work and that of others with increasing confidence and criticalitySuggestions on how to meet the Learning Outcomes
Perhaps there was a particular reflection post in which you explored a text from the reading list in depth; a piece of independent visual research where you were able to reflect on the photographic work - its context and visual and technical qualities - with a questioning, objective standpoint; a research post further investigating a given 5 Course Guide for assessment of Photography units theme discovered within the coursework; reflection on a gallery or exhibition visit.
